My tranny is smooth as butter!! I started this project in the spring and its running great. After lengthy convers’s with Mark at D&D, I went with the 1990 700R4 – I found it to be a better choice because with the 60 degree offset matched perfectly-ish with D&D’s bell housing adapter.

So the universal bell housing that apparently comes with multiple bolt patterns will NOT fit the 215?

One of the reasons Im choice’d with a 200CR or a late model 700 is because the bell-housing adaptor offered by D&D Fabricators up in Michigan can only accommodate these 2 tranny’s. Thanks… I feel pretty good about having it restored professionally. They mentioned the very same concerns about flash rust, so I’d rather have them do it having over 30 years of experience. I looked into that option too, but no such luck. Even if I did, as you say the filler neck may need relocation; I’d rather stick with my original tank.
