macf85 replied to the topic Original floor mats? What do they look like? in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 1 month ago
Eric,
Here is a scan from an options page in a Cutlass information book I bought years ago. The original copy isn’t the best. The mats are shown in the lower right corner. See Jim Noel’s article on this website titled 1961-1963 F85 Car and Option Prices. They are listed as option J3 for $6.36 and apparently only available for the front floor.…[Read more] -
macf85 replied to the topic Wanted: Parts needed to finish my 1963 Jetfire in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 1 month ago
Ken,
I could never find N.O.S. end bumper bolts. My originals self-destructed when I took my bumpers off. I ended up using ones I found at Restoration Specialties that were for either a 1937 or a 1939 DeSoto. Don’t know the part number, I lost the receipt for it. They have an oval shaped head that is a little longer than the original but has…[Read more] -

Very nice display Eric! Is this an indoor show? Are there any other cars as interesting as the Jetfire?

O.K., I’ll start it off. Here’s a photo of my ’63 Cutlass and your ’62 Jetfire at the 2013 OCA Nationals. My car’s assembly line completion date was July 25, 1963. It’s exactly 50 years old the date of this photo.
The next photo is at Vago Park which is located along the route of an old street car line that went from downtown St. Louis out…[Read more]

Jim Osborn has one for a 1963 Cutlass. Not sure if it’s exactly the same as ’62 Jetfire. Here is a link: http://www.osborn-reproduction.com/catalog/ProductDetail.asp?rsProduct_Position=FIL%3ACAT+%3D+%27OA3A%27ORD%3AABS%3A80KEY%3APAR%3A

Guess I’m just better safe than sorry. I’ve removed rubber fuel system parts from various cars in the past 10 to 15 years that seemed to be more deteriorated than they ever used to going back to the 70’s. Some of the rubber accelerator pumps in the N.O.S. carburetor kits I’ve used have failed prematurely and I believe had deteriorated either due…[Read more]

I bought an NOS fuel pump and decided it was worth rebuilding it with fresh modern fuel compatible rubber materials. Here is the source I got my parts from. They also have rebuilding services if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself.

Very cool car. I’ve never seen the ash tray insert for the console. Does it have the ash tray in the dash board too? I guess in the early ’60s the more ash trays the better.

I know Jim said that he met with the Oldsmobile’s historians and archives and found that Olds didn’t keep records of which type transmissions were sold. I bet the 3-speed manual is more rare in the Jetfire than the 4-speed. Most were automatics. Is the shifter on the column or the floor? I’d like to see pics but I have a dumb phone and don’t…[Read more]

Have fun with this car. I’m jealous. You hit the jackpot finding a genuine 4-speed Jetfire that is unmolested and unrestored.

macf85 replied to the topic 15 inch wheel option? in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 10 years, 2 months ago
The 1963 factory service manual lists the available sizes as 6.50 x 13, 6.50 x 14 and 6.00 x 15. I would imagine the ’62 is probably the same. When my dad bought our 1963 in 1974 it still had the original spare (6.50 x 14). It was discarded years ago because it was dry rotted. The white wall was between 3/4″ to 1″ wide. I can’t remember what…[Read more]

macf85 replied to the topic replacing generator with alternator in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 10 years, 3 months ago
If no-one on this site has an extra one you’re probably going to get one from a salvage yard or swap meet. You could start with Desert Valley Auto Parts. They have lots of early model cars from the dry-arid part of the U.S. I’m sure there are other salvage yards that deal nationally.
Good luck.

Hi Eric, I’m curious how the VIN tag on the fire wall of your new 4-speed car designates the 4-speed option. Would you be able to post a photo of the VIN tag when you have time. Good luck getting it running!

G.M. switched to alternators in 1963. Getting a bracket for a ’63 F-85 would be the easiest thing to do without having to modify anything. Then you could get a rebuilt alternator for a ’63 and splice in your aftermarket wiring harness. You’ll have to check pulley alignment with the crank pulley, etc.

I got a kit a few years ago for my ’63 Cutlass that was made from materials that are compatible with the crappy fuel we get these days. I can’t find the receipt but I think it might be this supplier I found on the net. Here is a link. Check with him to see if he has anything for your ’62…[Read more]
