Bruce Sweeter's Bio

JetfireMan_1963_1a_200
My name is Bruce Sweeter and I live in Danvers, Ma.  More than likely I have talked to most of you at one time or another over the phone or on the computer and maybe even sold you parts. I have been involved with Oldsmobiles since 1960 when I go my license. My father was driving a 1951 Olds 98 2 door hardtop with power windows and no power steering. I drove that and it became mine when my father picked up a 1958 88 2 door post coupe. I drove the 51 until one day it didn't start so we pushed it up the street and got it started one cylinder at a time until all 8 were firing up. I drove it home and it was running pretty good so before I left my father said shut it off and see how it starts, well it never started again. That was before I got into the mechanics of cars.

Rear Axle Ratios

Following is an article about rear axle ratios.  This article was originally posted in the Forum.

I'm not into the 61 that much but the ratios were the 3.08, 3.23, and 3.36. I can give you the standard and optional axle ratios for 62 and 63 and I think 61 would be about the same even though 61 had a 3 speed Automatic.

Here is what I have for 62 Hydramatic.
F-85 (except 117 and 167) standard was 3.23 with or without A/C, optional expressway ratio was 3.07 with or without A/C, and optional mountain ratio was 3.36.

F-85 (117 and 167) standard was 3.36 with or without A/C, optional expressway and mountain were N/A.

F-85 (15 " wheels) standard was 3.36 with or without A/C, optional Expressway ratio was 3.23 with or without A/C, optional mountain ratio was N/A.

Jetfire Engine Stamping

It has been my experience that the ’62 Jetfire engines have stamped numbers that begin with HHI, e.g. HHI 304490 or HHI 339111.  The ’63 Jetfires had engines stamped with JJ, e.g., JJ 292 or JJ 454.  Not sure of the significance of the “I”.  The ’62 numbers following HHI tend to be higher than the JJ numbers for the ’63.  May have something to do with the fact that the ‘62’s didn’t come out until later in the year.  Take a look at your numbering.  You may find a ’62 engine in a ’63 car!

Jetfire Body Moulding

Jetfire_Front_Side_Moldings_200Many Jetfire owners are not aware that some  ’63 Jetfire  front fenders have different types of spears on the side.  One is male and the other  female.  The first type spear overlaps  the side molding  and the second type spear  is overlapped by  the side molding.  The second type came out later in the year.   Not sure why the difference.  Maybe a change in manufacturer?
