I ran across a photo of a ’62 Jetfire with a see-through hood. Does anyone know anything about it? Was it a manufacturer’s display model at one time or custom made by someone else? Looks like it has 15″ wheels. And I wonder if the dual hood trim has been cut where the opening is or removed all-together? Also there is some kind of tacked on panel hanging down from the front valance. The picture is from the 2003 OCA Nationals.
I saw that car at the Nationals in Columbus in 2003. The Shaudys had just finished restoring it I believe. They needed a good bottle of the turbo fluid for the holder under the hood and I remember sending them a new one still in the box. I actually had a chance to buy a see through hood which supposedly, if I remember right, came off a 1961 F85. That was before I saw this car and foolishly i didn’t buy it.
Do you remember if the see-through hoods on the Shaudy’s car and the one you almost got were something a dealer could special order or do you think they were fabricated by a shop or private owner?
I don’t have the answer to that question for sure. The one I looked at was mounted in what I was told was a 61 F85 hood. I know it was very similar to the 62 hood and I remember a similar latch assembly. The price on it was $65. and at the time it was more than I could afford to spend and I wasn’t 100%sure it would fit my 62. It looked like it could have been something that might have been put on a few cars to promote the new engine, just a guess. It didn’t look like a cob job. Maybe the Shaudys would have more info. It makes more sense if it were on a 62 Jetfire to show the turbocharger.
