That S10 master cylinder has a 1″ bore. Again, you need to really understand the relationship between bore size and pedal pressure and stroke. My 7/8″ bore M/C noticeably reduced pedal pressure.

The car weighs 2600 lbs. Why do you need a vacuum booster? The stock booster was under the dash. You’d need to find one of those i…[Read more]

[quote quote=15141]I picked up a battery tray off of a 62 F85. It looks completely different that the one I have on my 62 Cutlass. thoughts.[/quote]
There are two styles, the one with the bracket that goes over the top of the battery and the one with the small clamp on the side. My South Gate-built 62 wagon came with the latter. Unfortunately,…[Read more]

joe_padavano replied to the topic Jetfire Windshield Replacement in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 4 years, 8 months ago
This info is a little late (since the original posts were from 2016), but the Jan 1965 printing of the parts book shows different windshields for rubber channel and glue-in applications the 1961-63 cars, each in both clear and tinted. Part numbers and footnotes are shown in the two attached pages from that parts book.

joe_padavano replied to the topic Looking for passenger side 62 fender in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 4 years, 9 months ago
Eric,
I would have sworn that the 61 and 62 fenders were the same P/N, but the parts book shows different numbers for each year. What I don’t know is if the P/N difference is simply the fact that the 62 fenders have fastener holes punched for the die cast extension on the leading edge.

Unclear how that helps. Different wheel bearings, for starters. Different spindles. The rotors are the easy part. I have Saab 900 rotors with the same 4 x 4.5″ bolt pattern for the front. They have plenty of offset from the wheel mounting surface to t…[Read more]

Correct. The thread-in ball joints have a hex.

I just rebuilt the front end on my 62 before Power Tour. I used a Kanter complete kit. Mine are screw in ball joints. I did have a problem with one of the ball joints being machined undersized. Kanter resolved the issue and sent me two new ones within two days. Great customer service. I provided pictures of the issue in this…[Read more]

joe_padavano replied to the topic Sensor location for gauge? in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 4 years, 10 months ago
The coolant in the engine is not all one temperature. It is expected that temps will vary depending on where you measure them.

joe_padavano replied to the topic Sensor location for gauge? in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 4 years, 10 months ago
What Eric said. The sending unit for a temp gauge must be in flowing coolant, and there is only one such location on the stock intake. You can get an aftermarket part that fits in the upper radiator hose and has an NPT port for a sender, but that is a little less accurate location.

The 2020 Nationals will be in July. I don’t remember the exact dates, but probably the third week or so. Apparently June in Tennessee isn’t hot and humid enough… 😉

Found a bad rear axle seal on my 62 wagon. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the “toggle bolt”-style seal pullers. I was about ready to head over to Harbor Freight when I spotted a defunct Olds 455 exhaust valve. A little sculpting of the head with a cutoff tool and a welded-on bolt to fit my slide hammer and the seal is out.

I’m rebuilding the front end on my 62 wagon in preparation for Power Tour and Homecoming. Bought the complete kit from Kanter. The driver’s side went together with no issues. I went to install the passenger side spindle and couldn’t get the lower ball joint to torque up. I finally realized that the ball joint stud was sticking up too far in the…[Read more]

joe_padavano replied to the topic Idler arm in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 4 years, 11 months ago
Yes, the threads that the idler arm pivots on wear out prematurely, allowing the arm itself to slop up and down. It’s apparently the threads on the bracket, as I put a new bushing on the threads of a used bracket and there was still slop. This slop is not present when both parts are new.

OK, what am I doing wrong with the idler arm on my 62 wagon? In the nine years I’ve owned this car, I’ve driven it about 10,000 miles and in that time I think I’ve replaced the idler arm three times. In the course of rebuilding the front end in preparation for taking this car on PowerTour and on to Homecoming, I just found out that the idler is…[Read more]

I’ll second the installation of a rear bar first. Enlarging the front bar just makes understeer worse. The back bar makes handling more neutral.

Sounds like you’d have to a bunch of money into it just to bring it up to the status of a parts car.
