Thanks for all the information. I want to get this done soon so I can finally drive the car at night. I drove it twice with the lights on and could not restart the car.

Can anyone recommend an alternator to replace the generator in my 62 Cutlass convertible? Is this a relatively easy replacement?

I have a 62 cutlass convertible and realized I should get the repair manuals. Do I need to buy the 61 manual and the 62 manual? It looks like the 62 is just a supplement.

I should mention that the tank that was in my car was not the original tank. It had been replaced by a very poor substitute and the exhaust system was changed to exit out the side rather than out the back. I don’t know if this tank would or would not work with the exhaust going out the back.

Thanks for the information. We did take a look at the back of the instrument panel and tried to find the wire that led to the gauge but were not having much luck.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my previous posts about the gas tank for a 62 Cutlass convertible. I could not find an original tank so the radiator shop ended up using a new replacement tank for a 70 Nova. He had to close up one hole (I think it was a rear fill tank) and make another hole. Thanks for the dimensions. It seems to be a thin tank. Most of the tanks we are finding available for sale seem to be closer to 8 inches.

Thanks for the information and the great pictures. Not knowing a lot about cars I’m surprised the tanks are different for the 63 and the station wagons.

They do seem to be very similar cars but I don’t know if it will fit. The 62 cutlass is a side fill tank that enters at the bottom of the tank (at least I think it does, I have not seen an original tank). Thanks for the offer to provide the measurement and the lead to Desert Valley Auto Parts. I called them and they said they would look when they are in that yard again. He said the equipment they use to move the cars frequently damages the gas tanks so he was not sure they would have one in good shape.

Can someone please measure the depth (height) of a gas tank for a 62 cutlass convertible?? My car has a replacement tank that is not made for a car. The guy at the shop thinks it might even be a boat gas tank. He wants to know the depth of the original to help him find another tank that might work.

VV is the color code on my plate. I think it is chariot red. The examples of chariot red don’t look like the color of my car. I was guessing the repaint was some other color.

I have a 62 Cutlass convertible that needs a gas tank. The original was replaced with some other tank that has a massive leak due to poor installation. I have not been able to find an original tank. Any suggestions on a tank that will work?
