joe_padavano replied to the topic Conersion of orig AM radio to AM/FM + options by Aurora in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 8 months ago

If you primarily play MP3s, I wouldn’t even bother with converting. There are several stand-alone stereo systems for older cars that use either bluetooth or a memory card to play MP3s. These units can be hidden anywhere and use either a small remote or your phone to control them.

joe_padavano replied to the topic Changing out generator for an alternator in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 8 months ago

I simply used an alternator bracket from a 1963 215. The bracket bolted in place of the generator brackets on my 62. It will accept the standard Delco external regulator alternator, or a 12SI family internal regulator alternator, or a CS130 (with the correct case). I currently have the CS130 on my 62 and it works great. I swapped the pulley…[Read more]

joe_padavano replied to the topic Edelbrock carb to orig air cleaner adapter in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 8 months ago

I suspect you’ll need a 10″ aftermarket air cleaner, not the more common 14″.

joe_padavano replied to the topic Edelbrock carb to orig air cleaner adapter in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 8 months ago

You need to cut the center from a newer air cleaner and weld it into the base of your original. I got a spare original base so as not to hack up mine. Alternately, get an aftermarket air cleaner. You can use an aftermarket base under the stock upper lid, as the lit simply seals on the filter. This will leave an opening around the base of the…[Read more]

The easiest and best way is probably to use Google.

Type (WITH the quotes) into the Google search box, along with the topic you seek.

joe_padavano replied to the topic Moulding Clips in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 9 months ago

Many vendors sell these clips. The ones today will only have one of the two wires, but that is only to hold it in place until you tighten the nut so this won’t affect function.

joe_padavano replied to the topic Exhaust system with Flowmsster HP-2 mufflers in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 9 months ago

    [quote quote=12047]
Why did you not go with the available exhaust kit from Waldron’s?

    [/quote]

Because their system is only a 2″ pipe. Mine is 2.5″. That’s over a 50% increase in flow area. Plus, I wanted an aggressive muffler, not stock-sounding. Plus, I enjoy fabricating stuff like this.

I considered true duals and chose not to go that way due to the loss of ground clearance. The 61-63 cars have a floor pan with an offset tunnel to allow the single exhaust pipe to fit next to the driveshaft. I found that the Walker 2.5″ cat-back pipe for a fourth-gen F-body fits almost exactly – I had to make some minor tweaks on the bend over…[Read more]

Just about every GM steering shaft has a similar u-joint that has the clip, rubber boot, etc. A trip to a wrecking yard should yield the parts you need.

Follow-up on this. Saw Ken and company – a pleasure as always. Also saw this pretty 62 convert in the car corral, though pricing was pretty optimistic. Still unsold on Sat afternoon.

joe_padavano replied to the topic Keeping my AT and want a different intake set-up in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 10 months ago

I’ve had an E-brock 500 cfm carb on my 62 for six years now. I fabricated throttle and TV linkages. The TV adjustment was trial-and-error. I simply kept lengthening the TV rod from the carb until the trans shifted and downshifted properly.

    And yes, that’s a Buick motor…

joe_padavano replied to the topic Transmission help needed… in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 9 years, 11 months ago

The bellhousing is easy, as D&D sells a reproduction manual trans bellhousing for the 215. The problem with any non-original trans is the size of the tunnel. Even putting one of the factory T10 four speeds into a car that originally had the RotoHydro5 automatic requires fabricating a new tunnel. It’s simple sheet metal work, but be aware of it.…[Read more]

The Rover motor is externally identical to the GM motor. All transmissions that fit one also fit the other. D&D sells a reproduction bellhousing if you want to retain the manual trans.

If you’re talking about these white plastic clips, they are used on early 1960s Impalas. Every Chevy repro parts vendor sells them. This vendor has a pack of 20 for $10:

joe_padavano replied to the topic Rear Brake Shoes? in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 10 years ago

The 9×1.75 rear shoes are unique to the 61-63 Skylark/F-85. Kanter sells theirs exchange, so pay a core deposit when you order and get it refunded when you return the old ones (same as when you by drum shoes from any auto parts store). Occasionally, unused shoes show up on ebay. I’ve grabbed a few just to have spares, as they are usually much…[Read more]

joe_padavano replied to the topic replacing generator with alternator in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 10 years, 6 months ago

It’s extremely easy to wire an internal-regulator alternator without buying an aftermarket pigtail. The two wires from the generator to the old regulator go away (mine were melted anyway). The brown wire from the GEN light goes to terminal #1 on the 12SI or the “L” terminal on the CS130. Run a wire from terminal #2 on the SI or the “S” terminal…[Read more]
