Jim Noel replied to the topic Steel sash channel in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 6 years, 7 months ago

I looked for replacements too. Only ones I could find were from Steele. They do require welding of the old brackets to the sash and a re-chrome job. I saved $100 by not having the chrome job buffed. The project is not low cost but I sure like the final result. Probably ended up with about $500 in the project!

    Hi Eric,
Yes, I removed all the trim also, rain gutter SS trim too! Not easy but glad I did it. Also used primer close to final body color for better effect.

Is it possible that the rear section (or even the complete length) of this drive shaft was replaced at some time? The parts book only shows one drive shaft for all 1962-63 4 speed Jetfires. Maybe the assembly line ran out of the Jetfire drive shafts that day and put in a Cutlass one to move the car down the line? The mysteries of production!

Jim Noel replied to the topic 63 Jetfire in Oregon for sale in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 6 years, 9 months ago

I do believe that this was only an option for 1963’s. The door switches for the dome lite were only put in 3100 series cars also. The 3000 series cars turned on the dome light with the rheostat on the headlight switch only. The 1962 and 1963 convertibles also had rear seat courtesy lights. My memory is getting fuzzy, someone might have different answers.

No mention of engine or trans?
The switch is an accessory for the courtesy lights. The interior lights, under the dash, can be turned on/off with the door closed.

I have not noticed the line up of these holes before? Don’t know what they were designed for. Would make a good secret lock out for an anti-theft system…ha!.

Jim Noel replied to the topic thermostat in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 6 years, 10 months ago

I agree with Eric. I have found that I get the best coolant performance when using an original GM (made by Dole Valve Co.) thermostat with a 168 degree rating. Originals can be found in junk yards and checked with a pot of water on a heating source and a good thermometer to check its opening temperature.

I have not heard of a drive shaft breaking apart. I have heard of the vibration problem from the shaft when the constant velocity (CV) joint goes bad. I have also experienced this myself! Attached the GM service guild article.
When the drive shaft is out of the car and on the floor, a good CV joint will not allow the shaft to lay straight, it will…[Read more]

    Hi Eric,
I have not lost oil pressure on any of 11, F-85 over the 57 years of owning the these little cars. A couple have been stored for up to 8 years without starting, but never lost oil pressure when I did start them up. Lost fuel several times but never oil. There is a problem hiding there…….

Jim Noel replied to the topic Jetfire V Spyder reliese dates in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 6 years, 11 months ago

Since my post above, I have learned that my information/assumptions were wrong. From the information collected on our Jetfire cowl tags, the Jetfire production must have started in late March or early April of 1962. When they were available to purchase from a dealer or delivered to the 1st dealers is only speculation at this time. It would be…[Read more]

Jim Noel replied to the topic Vacuum advance wanted in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 7 years ago

The 1963 parts book shows the 1962-63 Jetfire, manual transmission vacuum advance to be a 1116209. The 1116205 is for the auto trans. The manual has a 90 degree tube for a rubber hose and the auto has a threaded tube fitting.
There is an NOS aftermarket one on eBay that looks to be correct to me unless the V284 is what is in the…[Read more]

Here are the carb numbers for 1962 and 1963 4GC carbs. All F-85 Cutlass for either year should be using 4GC carbs. In looking for a carb for your 62, I would go for the 1963, part# 7023054 if not then the 1962 part# 7022752

Jim Noel replied to the topic 62 tv linkage in the forum Discussion Topics – Ask the Experts 7 years ago

Rochester Products division of GM, Quadrajet carbs were 1st introduced in 1965. If you have a Qjet carb on your 215 V-8, it is NOT stock, as issued. The 1961-63’s were all 2GC or 4GC carbs except Jetfire with the 1bbl RC carb. If you want to go stock you should be looking for a 4GC and linkage.

Here is the stock linkage set-up for a factory 2GC, 4GC and the RC carbs. If you go to an aftermarket carb, you will have to make your own linkage to accomplish the same function.
